Mountaineer Memories

The first FS reunion, October 1991, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the first National Forest, was held on the White River National Forest, Glenwood Springs, Co. The Shoshone was the first NF established. The White River was the second NF and where Teddy Roosevelt spent some time on one of his many travels in the wilderness’ of the western US. As host, my first task was to introduce the guests. On this beautiful Colorado day, we had gathered under a large tent where we were to hold the opening ceremonies. After the welcome I began the introductions of the Chiefs. I started by how delighted we were to have the three Chiefs present, “ Let us welcome these three retired Chiefs whose direction and support made the Forest Service so special, Chief John McGuire, Chief Max Peterson and Chief Dale Roberson” At that time Dale got up and said, “ Tom, unless you know something I don’t I think I am not retired” My heart fell to the ground as I could not believe I made such a mistake. Luckily Dale had a good sense of humor and I survived . However, I did retire the following January.
